Royal Jelly

Royal jelly is the equivalent of breast milk for bees. It is produced by the hypopharyngeal glands located on the head of worker bees and for the first three days of their life, in the egg stage, it is the only food for all bees. The workers are then fed a mixture of royal jelly, pollen and honey, while the queen will continue to feed only on royal jelly throughout her life. It consists of 60-70% water, 12-15% protein, 10-16% sugars (fructose, glucose, sucrose, etc.), 2-8% lipids, the most important of which is 10-hydroxy-decenoic acid, minerals, enzymes, hormones (testosterone, progesterone, estradiol), 29 amino acids, antimicrobial substances, vitamins (A, D, E, K and especially B vitamins), acetylcholine and cholesterol, as well as another steroid substance, the action of which is not yet well known.
